Monica Poulard-Hawkins’ Reflections

Monica Poulard-Hawkins’ Reflections

In 2022 – I worked; my spirit, soul and body.  90-minute prayer time every morning, mindfulness exercises to build capacity for translating insights in real-time and a commitment to daily physical exercise and healthy eating.   By mid-year, after an 18-month change management season, as the principal, I needed a “tune up.” I felt warn, hurt, disappointed, encouraged and very uncomfortable.  It was painfully glorious.  I called a mentor, friend and many say the world’s current day Peter Drucker- Bill George.  He was writing a book to lead emerging leaders into his seminal work of authentic leadership – True North for Emerging Leaders.  I dove into the galley as a homework assignment from Bill. The reading was deep, revealing and compelling and required a deeper level of self-assessment.

I have always known that Black People are not a monolith.  As a people, we hit all dimensions of existence, now I had to be fully engaged individually and collectively in Black experience, with individuals and teams.  Many energetically expressed their perspectives, even while butting up against those who simply did not want to engage at all, even in a supposed seat of authority.  Playing it safe became a challenge for those caught “marching in place” as Pat Russell McCloud is fond of saying.  This forced us to press forward with the truth, and call it out, on purpose.  Working with Bill, reading his galley I learned two things about myself.

  • I am not crazy. I am just a Royal misfit. That’s pretty darn cool
  • Doing this work would we require me to stay grounded, while hmmm “sitting between         Judas and John” on many occasions
  • From Bills work, I also learned from Steve Jobs to Howard Shultz and when THEY do      the hard work on themselves and for the enterprise, they have all faced “crucible              moments”; they re-frame their life story at their core which brings me to the next point
  • Authentic leaders aggregate the decision-making process by asking four basic questions –1)      What does the world need? 2) What am I good at? 3) How will what I do change the        world (for the better)? And then 4) How do I make money?

Thankfully, the tune up is working well. I find the current state of my spirit, soul and body to be in a state of liberty that was always the desire of my Father.  It is still an awkward existence, but I work for balance through stillness and action, to find the purposeful rhythm of at this new altitude.  I find this incredibly liberating; thinking about the money after asking the three questions.  Here’s the beauty of this moment for me.  We can focus on Black, by doing what we do well and change the world for the better.  In doing THIS well, we will prosper holistically with all stakeholders.  I have never felt more on purpose in my entire earth walk.  Thank you, Lord.  Please continue to order my steps.  I look forward to our continued meetings in the Garden in 2023 – full of your designed vision for all of humanity.

Sincerely,

Monica Poulard-Hawkins
